Many high school and university students, upon hearing the term Industrial Informatics, often assume that it is a program under the School of Information and Communication Technology, as the word “informatics” is prominently featured in its name.
However, in reality, this is a training program managed by the School of Electrical Engineering in collaboration with Grenoble Institute of Technology (INP Grenoble, France), under the Vietnam–France PFIEV (Programme de Formation d’Ingénieurs d’Excellence au Vietnam) cooperation framework that has been established for over 20 years.
In simple terms, Industrial Informatics is the application of information technology in industrial fields.
A quick Google search will reveal various explanations at different levels, but one of the most straightforward definitions describes the role of an Industrial Informatics Engineer as follows:
“Industrial Informatics Engineers help manufacturing companies operate more efficiently and productively by developing, monitoring, and improving the performance of automated systems.”

Thus, the name Industrial Informatics clearly reflects the integration of IT and industry — the application of information technology to automation and quality management in industrial production systems.
To achieve this, the curriculum provides learners with comprehensive knowledge in:
Control systems, data acquisition and processing, and system supervision;
Actuator mechanisms and industrial communication networks;
Forecasting and object recognition methods.
With this solid foundation, graduates are not only capable of solving industrial problems but can also apply their knowledge to various intelligent systems in other fields.
This program is accredited by the French Engineering Accreditation Board (CTI) and receives long-term support from the French Government.
The program is taught in Vietnamese, but students receive intensive English and French training to confidently defend their graduation thesis before a joint French–Vietnamese committee in either English or French.
Successful graduates receive an official French diploma supplement.
Over the past 20 years, the Vietnam–France PFIEV programs — including Industrial Informatics managed by the School of Electrical Engineering — have admitted 21 cohorts with nearly 6,300 students.
From 2004 to 2019, the PFIEV program has produced 16 graduating cohorts with around 4,000 engineers, among whom more than 300 PFIEV students have studied in France through dual-degree programs and internship exchanges under various scholarship schemes, including those funded by the Vietnamese Government and the French Government.
